The Jerusalem Council resolved the question of Gentile believers' conformity to Israel's covenantal marks of circumcision and the Law of Moses. But the council left unanswered the subsequent question of the disposition of these two identity markers. Has the inauguration of the new age in Christ abrogated circumcision and the Mosaic Law such that they have no relevance for the Church? This sermon examines this question and shows that the Bible's answer is that these physical marks of God's people have been fulfilled in their spiritual counterparts. As with everything in salvation history leading up to Christ's coming, circumcision and the Mosaic Covenant served a prophetic and preparatory role, having their true significance and point of fulfillment in the person and work of the Lord Jesus. In their case, too, the shadows have yielded to the substance.
