The theme of Samuel is the kingdom of God. Israel is a theocracy, a nation under God's saving reign mediated through David, God's King and vice regent. David rules under God's authority according to God's law with the prophets like Samuel and Nathan, and the priests like Zadok and Ahimelech. At the close of 2 Samuel 8, we read that David administered justice and righteousness to all his people. It sounds almost like the mythical kingdom of Camelot.
But the king falls and the kingdom begins to fail. From this extraordinary elevation, Israel begins her descent into spiritual ruin, though not without occasional revivals, until she is carried away to Babylon in 586 BC. What lessons can we learn?
