A little background: From chapter 6 to chapter 7, 6 months passed by. John didn't give us any word in that time. In 6 more months from chapter 7, Jesus Christ will be crucified. 1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. The rumor mill was running about who Jesus Christ really is. 2 Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand. Little booths were built of twigs and branches and they lived in them for 7 days. It represents the time the Jews were wandering around in the desert. They would walk through the streets, like a parade, with a container of water, and when they got to the end, they'd pour the water out, and it represented Jesus Christ taking care of them during the 40 years of wandering. 3 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. Jesus Christ's half-brothers were here, giving Him advice, sending Him to Jerusalem to the center of things to show the people what He can do. 4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. 5 For neither did his brethren believe in him. Jesus Christ's half-brothers (Mat 15:35) didn't believe He was the Lord in the flesh, and they told Him to go to Jerusalem and show the people His powers to prove who He really is. The Jews at this time had had it with the Romans controlling them and taking all their money through taxation. They just wanted the Romans overthrown.
