Deuteronomy 6:5: "And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." Jesus said this was the greatest commandment. But it is impossible for us to love simply in response to a commandment. Love does not spring from a command, or from obedience to a command, and God does not expect us to love Him because he commands us to; that could not possibly work in any other conceivable relationship. Love springs from love. ! John 4:10: "Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins." 1 John 4:19 "We love him, because he first loved us." So there are endless Scriptures to show that the one truth that breaks through the darkened mind and hardened heart is the love of God toward us. Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so. When the heart understands this truth and believes it, that is when the light shines into his soul.
