Those of us who preach have an awesome responsibility (see James 3:1ff), but in this section of Luke Jesus reminds us that hearers have a great responsibility to take full advantage of their opportunities to hear His Word. First He taught the parable of the soils in which soil represented a different response to Jesus’ gospel message (Luke 8:4-15). This week’s passage begins with three sayings about our response to God’s Word (Luke 8:16-18). We must make use of Jesus’ teaching or our privilege of hearing will be taken away. Our passage also contains an incident when Jesus’ mother and brothers want to see Him, but Jesus declares that His true family includes those who hear and do His Word (Luke 8:19-21).
Our passage raises several important questions including: - How can we be better listeners? - What is the relationship between hearing the Word and doing the Word? - What does it mean that we are in Jesus’ family? - How does our relationship with our spiritual brothers and sisters impact our relationship with our earthly families?
