The Pharisees had high standards. You wouldn't catch them hanging out with tax collectors and sinners.
The problem is that we begin to convey the idea that a Christian is nothing more than a person who doesn't do certain bad things or go to certain “bad” places. Never mind that Jesus did.
The result is an imaginary sign hanging over our doors saying “you can't come in here and be accepted unless you meet our standards….. unless you have your act together in all these areas.” To the general public it reads, “perfect people only”.
What does the unchurched person often say when invited? “The roof would cave in”. “Lightning would strike me”. Why does the world think like that?
Without this kind of honesty and openness we become a guarded community instead of a healing community. We also remain bound by our struggles. We get wrapped up in appearances and doing all the right things. We manage to achieve most of the details of Christianity and miss the larger message of love and healing. Just like the religious order of Jesus' day did.
