How ironic! Jesus disciples lived in fear though the greatest power in heaven and earth surrounded them. Their fear was understandable - They could have been arrested for supporting someone executed for sedition. The things that make Christians afraid today are also understandable. Yet they had courage enough to meet; Christ often gives his people just enough grace to keep going. Fear is paralysing; it kept Israel out of the Promised Land and hinders Christian growth and service. Thomas shows us what can happen when someone rejects the evidence in favour of fear. But the church today is surrounded by power just as the first Christians were. Christ is on a triumphal march, from the cross and the tomb to the completion of God's kingdom. When he appeared in the house where they were he gave tangible evidence of his resurrection. He gave the Holy Spirit in a symbolic manner, showing the grace, wisdom and strength they would soon possess. It was more than the general work of the Spirit in regeneration - it was power for gospel ministry. Their work would change the eternal destiny of men, no less. How unlike Jesus is to the great men of the world. He not only has power, he comforts. His presence strengthened the apostles' faith. His rebuke to Thomas was overshadowed by the comfort given. Our Master does not regard us as 'human resources', he calls us 'friends'. If you belong to Christ he is sharing his work with you. He will also share his reward.
