IBLP: Institute in Basic Legalistic Principles It should be noted that the IBLP founded by Bill Gothard should be known as the Institute in Basic Legalistic Principles.

Great Sermon! I would just like to say that the purpose of 'hard' preaching is to have the hearer examine themselves in light of what is being said. If it isn't for you, ignore it and move on. Only a guilty conscience is offended by it. Also, to equate behavior modification with legalism is silly for two reasons. No one in any church I have ever been a member of has been disciplined for failing to follow 'authoritarian' preaching. Two, if preaching never modifies your behavior, what good is it? Lastly, I believe we should have grace with all men as much as possible, exactly because they are men. It is tragic that we often judge good men by their worst moments.

Bill Gothard: Authoritarian Legalist One of the primary hallmarks of Bill Gothard, as is that of Jack Hyles, is authoritarian legalism. The crops of authoritarian legalism were cultivated by both Jack Hyles and Bill Gothard. The end result is that both men were abusive. It is important to remember the example of Diotrephes in 3 John 9-11.

Bill Gothard Examined If we were to examine the teachings of Bill Gothard, we would recognize and realize that they are legalistic. While IBLP emphasizes morality and orderliness in a time of permissiveness, it does so to an excessive extent, thereby being very legalistic.
While we must practice discipline in the ministry, we must avoid going to the extent of behavior modification, which is just another name for legalism.
