The Galatians were drifting from Christ, imagining that they could get right and stay right with God by their own works, replacing or supplementing the work of the Saviour. Paul begins his letter by setting before them the glorious plan and purpose of God the Father, that Christ should deliver his people from the present evil age by the sacrifice of himself on their behalf. Such good news calls forth the praises of God, leaving no space for the self-congratulation of men. We need to keep the crucified Christ before us, if we are not to drift from the only saving truth of his gospel.
