Let's read a poem together, turn w/ me to Ecclesiastes 1:1-11. This poem (vv.2-11) forms the preface to Solomon's documentary. That's Solomon in verse one: the Preacher, the son of David, the king in Jerusalem. Solomon's story in Ecclesiastes is about one man's search for fulfillment. Where was Solomon looking, when he went looking for happiness & fulfillment & meaning? Under the sun! Do you see it (e.g.) there in verse three? Under the sun! Do you remember what that means? Solomon traces a line across the sky. God sits enthroned above the line – above the sun. But Solomon chases life beneath it, never looking up. Life under the sun is life without regard to God. I like to call it, life stuck in the horizontal. Folks today call it "secular." It is a pointless and fleeting and unsatisfactory way to live. Solomon introduces his quest for fulfillment with a poem; the theme of Solomon's sonnet is the vanity of life lived under the sun, ignoring God. I've put my own title on the wise king's poem: Solomon's "Ode to an Empty Life"! Let's review it like this: "Solomon's Ode to an Empty Life" (A Poem in Two Pessimistic Parts): Part 1: You can't change the world (vv.2-8). Part 2: You won't be remembered (vv.9-11). But your should remember this, Solomon's sad song was written as warning to those who live only…"under the sun."
