The Old Testament's promise of the recovery of sacred space was the promise of a new creation. And inasmuch as the Holy Spirit is the agent of all of God's creative work, the Scriptures ascribe the new creation in Christ to the power of the Spirit. The prophets insisted that Yahweh was going to send His Spirit in order to renew the creation, but specifically to recover it back to Himself; the goal of the Spirit's work is to transform the created order into sacred space. So it is that the coming of Christ - which heralds the inauguration of the promised renewal - is everywhere associated with the presence and power of the Spirit. This sermon considers the Spirit's presence and the exercise of His power in relation to the person of Jesus Christ. If the fulfillment of sacred space in Christ has a focal point in the work of the Spirit, that work begins with Jesus Himself, the One who is preeminently the Man of the Spirit.
