In John 18:12-27 there are two dramas taking place simultaneously – Jesus' trial and Peter's denial. This is so that we might exalt Christ during the moment of His greatest humiliation by contrast to Peter. We find the wonderful courage of Jesus contrasted to the degrading fear of Peter. Peter, though elevated above other men, falls far short of the glory of God.
There are many things that Peter's experiences teach us. We learn that the Christian is weak; we learn the danger of self-confidence. We learn of the power of fear, and the danger of warming oneself with the world. But more than this we witness the beauty and the majesty of Jesus Christ, in His Messianic resolve to save His people from their sins.
In this the third encounter between God and man, God this time slays man's heart with nothing more than a look.
