“ The Overly-Sensitive Christian ” The “weak in the faith”, or Christians with overly-sensitive consciences, were so called by Paul to describe Christians who do not rest their confidence in the whole of Christian doctrine. It is important to note that a weak Christian can still be a strongly-convicted Christian. In fact, Pastor Nutter’s first point about these people is that they are in fact saved.
The basic problem is a want of Scriptural knowledge. The blood-washed conscience, the law of God written on our hearts, the light of men, and the image of God are not a collective substitute for the Bible. The conscience still needs to be informed by the word of God. If we’re not careful, we will subject it to our own customs, ideas of good Christian behavior, or personal peeves and sensitivities. This destabilizes our faith and creates needless problems among the brethren. It confuses us regarding actual sin and causes us to beg unnecessary pardon.
When the weak Christian stops afflicting his conscience with trivialities, he will discover the gift of Christian liberty and step forth as a mature, well-grounded Christian.
