Paul has spoken of Christ's pre-eminence over Creation etc in the previous verses - see previous sermon in series - now he speaks of Christ as pre-eminent in the Church. This is to refute the error in the church at Colossi concerning Christ being one of many ways to salvation and not being the only Son of God.
