Aim: To fulfill our blessed privileges, as children of light.
Doctrine: Children of light have sacred responsibilities in this world. Churchmen do not have the option of skirting these because they mark who we are, in Christ.
Exegesis: The progressive nature of the ministry of the children of light: first, we are to embrace our identity, as the church (v. 8a); then, we are to discern the good path God would have us trod (vv. 8b-10); finally, we are to change the world, by shaming sin (v. 11).
Further application: How the children of light shine in God's universe: by accepting our pedigree—as His dearly loved church; and by impressing gospel grace on everyone (and everything) around us.
Key verse: v. 8 ''For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light...''
