Last week we encountered John the Baptizer in the wilderness preparing the way for the Lord Jesus through a ministry of baptism and repentance. This week we turn specifically to Jesus' baptism. We will explore how his baptism links to the history of redemption and the person and work of Christ. We'll also examine the events which occurred during Jesus's baptism, such as the heavens opening, and his being declared the Son of God by a heavenly voice. Correspondingly we will also see that the Holy Spirit descends and comes to rest upon him, empowering Jesus to be perfectly obedient to God in fulfilling his earthly ministry and confirming his status as the Messiah.
