It was because they were filled with goodness and knowledge through the Gospel, that Paul was confident that they were able to admonish one another. In modern day terms, these Chrsitians at the church in Rome showed their spiritual maturity by the fact that they were competent to counsel one another. Admonishing a friend and *staying* a friend of the one you admonish is easier said than done and does not come without the grace of the Gospel filling the heart.
