In this sermon I will continue our exposition of Isaiah. This chapter divides itself quite naturally into several different sections, slowly building toward its climax. My outline reveals the progression. Once again we will see God's displeasure with His Old Covenant people. But in this case the emphasis of Isaiah is upon the cause. These people – but the religious leaders especially – were thoroughly hypocritical in their religious life and worship. Interestingly, when our Lord Jesus confronted the same problem with the Pharisees of His day, He turned to this chapter of Isaiah and used his words to indict that generation. The thing that so greatly disturbed both Isaiah and Jesus was the divorce resulting from hypocrisy. That is, the divorce between the lips and the heart. There was a disparity between the outward expression and the inward reality – they were not consistent; they did not match. Well, Isaiah goes on to demonstrate the way in which the Lord will confound the hypocrite, and then finally triumph in the end. Since there are pertinent lessons for us in this chapter, may God grant us understanding of His Holy Word.
