A. “Rest” (cf. Ps. 95:11; Gen. 2:1-3 and Heb. 3:7-4:11)
There is connection between the Sabbath institution and this original arrangement that man is put in, in the Garden of Eden.
B. “Work” (Gen. 1:28; Ps. 100:2; 2:11; cf. Ex. 3:12; Deut. 4:19; Num. 3:7-8, 38)
The call upon Adam is to serve the Lord, to worship Him, to walk in obedience to all God has commanded him to do or not to do.
C. “Covenant” (2 Sam. 7 w/ Ps. 89:3; Hos. 6:7; Prov. 2:17; Mal. 2:14)
• Formally binds people together in an official relationship • Requires faithfulness, loyalty, and commitment to that relationship • Includes consequences for keeping or not keeping the terms of that relationship
This covenant is a covenant of works in which man was to worship and serve God, by obeying His commandments.
Conclusion
…if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the LORD. Leviticus 18:4-5 (cf. Gal. 3:12)
…we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. Galatians 2:16
