The Pharisees were making accusations against the Lord Jesus of Sabbath breaking and blasphemy. Jesus cites several authorities to support the veracity of His own personal testimony. John the Baptist, the miracles, the scriptures and God the Father Himself all bear witness to the truth of Christ's message. The Lord answered the Pharisees and used the scriptures to turn their accusations back upon themselves as rejecters of God's word. Just as the religious leaders did in the time of Christ, many in the church will refuse the testimony of the Father on behalf of the Son and in doing so receive the indignation of the Father.
