The message begins by examining the early references to Mark and making reasonable deductions from them about the early life of Mark. In summary, Mark seemed to grow up in the home of an affluent, prominent, hospitable and devoted member of the Jerusalem church. He was probably reared by his mother. Barnabas and Paul, having established a relationship with Mark while in Jerusalem (Acts 12:25) took the young man along on their first missionary journey. His bad beginning was manifest by his deserting the missionary duo at Perga and returning home to Jerusalem. This desertion may have much in common with the strange episode described in Mark 14:50-52. The question, what might have led to such fearful responses?, is raised and its probable answer applied to parents rearing boys. The message concludes by intimating Mark's recovery and good ending.
