John's first epistle addresses matters of doctrine and practice at the heart of living out one's life in Christ. It speaks to such issues as righteousness and obedience and so has frequently been treated as a litmus test for determining one's salvation. This misdirected approach reflects common misunderstandings of the concepts of law, righteousness, obedience, etc. If we are to grasp John's intent and instruction and so profit from his epistle, we must rethink these and other issues so as to think John's thoughts after him and not impose our own notions on him. This rethinking is the goal of this prelude series and this first message seeks to frame the issues.
