The fifth church that John is instructed to send a letter to is the one in Sardis. Christ pictures Himself as He who has the seven Spirits of God (the Holy Spirit - 1:4) and the seven stars (angels of the churches - 1:20). The problem described regarding this church is that they had a external reputation for being alive, but internally they were dead. The prescription for this church involves six commands: realize the dangerous position that you are in; revive what is good; recall what you have been taught; retain those sound doctrines; readjust where you are going the wrong way; and receive this message as being from God. He praises the remnant for not defiling themselves like the majority. He promises those who will not wake up (realize their sin and repent) should expect His arrival to judge them, but all overcomers will be clothed in white, given eternal life and be publicly acknowledged as belonging to Christ before God Himself.
