This earth has a grip on us in our youth. As we mature and grow older the cords that bind us to the earth begin to be cut one by one. The cords that bind us here are many …home, social circle, attachment to a locality, or a piece of land, loved ones, business and work, habits of life, and hope in the things of this life. One of the first cords to be cut is our early hopes and ambitions. The fancies with which we start life are not facts. Loss of friendship is another strong cord that is broken early on, and then repeatedly as we move along through life. Loss of loved ones cuts one of the major cords that tie us to this world. The world seems empty without them even though there are people everywhere. If a person lives to an old age they are usually ready and willing to let go of this world. They leave gladly – not grudgingly. They leave softly and without a struggle and a fight to stay here. Our treasures are laid up in heaven, not on the earth, and as the cords are cut that bind us to this earthly life we realize it more and more.
