As the Divine Savior systematically unfolds in chapter 6 the mystery of His redemptive purpose in coming to mankind in human nature, the people who so energetically followed Him began to waver in their enthusiasm. Whether it was confusion or disagreement, the result was the same; they did not believe what He was telling them. It is at this point in His interactions with them that they begin to reject what He says because many of them had not been regenerated. That is, their hard hearts were not suited for, nor capable of, receiving the revelation of this deep truth and respond with complaining (verse 41) and quarreling among themselves (verse 52). We should not underestimate the significance of this exchange. He is showing them the path to eternal life and the fulfillment of what the formally claim to desire. Yet, when confronted with the truth, they do everything but place their faith in Him and rejoice in the promised blessings. Rather, they do what the hard-hearted always do. They reject, dispute, and quibble. Let this not be true of you. – Pastor Schlegel
