Intro: This is the Third Servant Song. It emphasizes Christ's responsiveness to the Father and His competence to save.
1. Jesus is responsive while Zion is unresponsive. No one came to answer when God called. No one listened to God's voice through His prophets. But the Servant of the Lord has an open ear to hear God's voice and then to speak a word in season to him who is weary.
2. The Servant is Competent (7-9) Jesus could and would act whild Israel could not act in their community nor stand in the judgment. They were incompetent, or not competent to act or stand. Why? Because they did not listen to the word of God and did not believe His promises.
This has great application for the church. The Father commissioned the Son to proclaim the gospel. He does so through His church. He does so in a special way through the preaching and teaching of the church. As such this passage is instructive to those called to preach and teach, giving encouragement in the task of opening the ear to God's word and then proclaiming it; leading to the ministry that prompts the congregation to find rest and peace in Jesus Christ; and giving courage to ministers who will face opposition and persecution bc of God's word. There is also an application to every member of the church, too, as each one represents Christ to the world. As with the Old Testament prophets, we are to be taught and shaped daily by God's Word, giving diligence to be led morning by morning. Then from that knowledge of God, to speak to those around us.
