Our flesh and the spirit have no overlap. There is no gray area between them. None of us are good. As Christians, we all have the fruit of the spirit in us along with the Holy Spirit. However, we often remain carnal and selfish in our daily walk. We follow our flesh and not the Spirit. We end up like Proverbs 25:28 (a person without restraints). We must maintain our temperance (self control). For ourselves and our families. If everything we do only benefits us, it's a big indication we are selfish letting our flesh control us.
