Wrong Question? (v. 1) •What caused this question? "Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? Paul's Answer (v. 2) •Paul's answer is emphatic: "By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?" God forbid, surely not, "No, indeed," Surely not!, etc. •There are two major reasons for a believer to not "live in sin" and Paul highlights the decisive reason in this passage. The two reasons are You are thankful and You Changed. •You're thankful. — that point is not highlighted in this though alluded to in v. 17 (cf. Gal. 2:20). Knowing what God did for you through the death of Jesus Christ, the forgiveness of your sin and declaring you righteous in his sight should make you thankful. •You Changed. A believer is not only declared righteous because of what Christ has done, namely, Christ's own righteousness is credited to him (that doesn't change him but changes his status not his being, his character). But he is also changed. Being regenerated, he has a new nature, born again and that change in his being and character will progress into holiness.
