After Noah, his family, and all the creatures came off the ark, they were commanded by Yahweh to multiply and populate the earth. Several new things then occur: mankind can now eat animals, yet holding the blood sacred; and capital punishment for murder is introduced. But the matter of chief significance is the LORD's promise never to destroy the earth again by water. The rainbow would appear, as the sign of this covenant, to remind God of his promise, as well as to assure us of God's faithfulness in keeping that promise. This covenant is typical of all divine covenants: they are unilateral - established solely by the initiative of God. This particular covenant benefits all mankind: believers and unbelievers alike - revealing God's common grace to all his creatures.
