A lament is a powerful means of bringing people face to face with reality. Living in denial, Israel was tempted to foolishly put their trust in powers and leaders who could not deliver from God's just judgement. Israel needed to be taught to weep over its hopeless situation by seeing clearly how foolish they were to put their hope in godless and cruel kings.
Humanity’s great need is to be ‘dis-illusioned’ with worldly power or its own cleverness so that it might see that there is no one who is fit to rule this world or able to deliver us from our foolishness apart from the One to whom that authority rightfully belongs – One who alone has prevailed over this world not by clever political power nor by devastating military might but by the ‘weakness’ of the cross!
We too may need to learn how to lament over our present situation in order to find the steady joy of trusting in the true Lion - the Lamb of God who was slain that He might reign - not only over a world that appears disordered and 'out of control' but also over our muddled and unruly hearts!
