Does this command with the first half of the commandments which focus on our vertical relationship to God or to the second half of the commandments with its focus on our horizontal relationships? Well its obvious isn't it, that this belongs to the second table and applies to our relationships with men. But listen there was an old Jew by the name of Philo who suggested that this commandment belonged in the first table.
Here was the reason. Parents, you see, are the first expressions of God that a child shall experience in his or her life. In fact Parents function as vice-regents of God to their children. They carry out day by day God-like functions in the life of a child. They love their children. Provide for their children. Protect their children. Lay down the law for their children.
Shakespeare put it this way, “The voice of parents is the voice of gods, for to their children they are Heavens lieutenants.”
So you see how a child honors and obeys his parents says much about his attitude towards God. And so this command is a perfect bridge between those commands addressing our relationship to God and those commandments addressing our relationship to humans.
