Obeying Parents in the Lord (Eph 6:1-3) Introduction Children, this letter to the saints in Ephesians in Christ Jesus is not just for your parents. It's for you. And what you're being taught is the same things that the adults are being taught. And it is a great blessing if you can learn this while you are a child.
1. Obey your parents in the Lord (v. 1) Christian children do not obey their parents, they obey their parents in the Lord. “Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord” (Col 3:20). “Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered” (Heb 5:8, see Luke 2:51). Reason: For This Is Right God wants you to do what's right from the heart.
2. Honor your father and mother (v. 2) Where is Paul quoting from? He expects you to know. Reason: The Promise of Blessing and Long Life (v. 3) “The hand of the diligent maketh rich.” Diligence, as a general rule, does secure riches; and obedient children, as a general rule, are prosperous and happy. The general promise is fulfilled to individuals, just so far “as it shall serve for God's glory, and their own good” (M. Henry).
Application Jesus says, “I honor My Father” (John 8:49). See Matt 15:3-6, 1 Tim 5:1-8, etc. on how long this applies.
Conclusion Do you know how you can not only please the Lord but tell the world that you are a Christian child, and that Christ lives in you by his Spirit, and preach that message in a very loud way?
