Jesus had just encouraged his disciples to model humility, and the admonition apparently reminded John of a recent incident. The disciples had witnessed one who did not follow them casting out demons in Jesus' name. He was neither one of the 12 nor one of the many followers of Jesus known to the 12. They gave him a cease and desist order. Now John wondered if they should have done that. Jesus said they were wrong to forbid this man. He may be serving in a different branch, and wearing a different uniform, but he is serving the same Commander-in-Chief. Here Jesus nipped sectarianism in the bud. Unfortunately it has since cropped up in a thousand different places.
