In this week's text, the Ammonite king, Nahash, wants to not only enslave the Israelite city of Jabesh-gilead, but to gouge out all of their eyes as well. God's people need a deliverer. This proves to be the perfect time for the new king, Saul, to prove himself. The Spirit comes upon Saul who with holy anger rallies Israel to a great victory for which he gives glory to God.
We are engaged in spiritual warfare, being surrounded by those who would destroy us. We too need the empowerment of the Spirit. We may even experience righteous anger, but we need to be careful because we fight, not with the weapons of the world, but with truth.
Finally, we were in desperate need of deliverance because of our slavery to sin and death. God sent a Spirit empowered Deliverer Who has defeated our enemy. To God be the glory.
