The last time we turned to Ecclesiastes, we started off down life's road, following after King Solomon, trying to find fulfillment. Kings want to be remembered. They build empires as they live and pyramids when life draws to a close. But young people want to make a difference, too. The young often seek to do something new and world-changing! All of us pause, from time to time, to think about life…and death. So as we turn to the opening pages of Ecclesiastes, we are back in the middle of Solomon's first four pursuits of life's meaning. (Last Sunday): i.) Wisdom (1:12-18). Solomon introduced his search for meaning; ii.) Pleasure (2:1-11). Eat, drink, be merry! But then what? (This evening): iii).More Wisdom (2:12-17). After all, wisdom is better than folly, but then what? iv.) Career (2:18-26). Work hard, work smart, perhaps succeed…but then what?
...Solomon says, "this too is vanity & striving after wind - not always bad, but never good enough…" |
