In chapters 51-52 of Isaiah we have the repeated theme to “Wake up!” Isaiah pleads with God to wake up and work in the present like He had in the past. God pleads with His people to wake up from their drunken stupor, and then He pleads with them again to wake up and prepare themselves for their deliverance. So, our present chapter begins with the Lord's summons to His people, but then it moves quickly from there to God's announcement about the impending redemption of His people. But the key to the text is found in the manner in which God will redeem, and the reason He gives for it. I develop this to some extent. The Lord then reveals that His messengers of redemption are truly blessed, because they bring “good news” to His people. Our passage concludes with a picture of the “exodus” out of Babylon. I conclude the sermon with remarks about the importance of this text for Christians. Isaiah's message to this ancient people of God is precisely what all the people of God need to hear – and they need to hear it all the time. That being the case, may the Lord graciously bless His ancient word to His modern people!
