Hundreds of years prior to the event sometimes called the "Triumphal Entry" of Christ into Jerusalem, Zechariah had prophesied saying "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey."
Jesus rode into Jerusalem fulfilling that prophecy to the letter, he was indeed the King of Israel, and the men of Jerusalem greeted Him that way, but the king they wanted was an earthly king who would free them from the Romans. The king they wanted, was not the King who had come to them. The king whom God sent was a king who had come not to do what they wanted by fighting the Romans but to do what they needed most by dying for their sins!
