The first pastor of the Old South Presbyterian Church, Reverend Jonathan Parsons served for thirty years (1746-1776) until the day he died. He was described as "eminently scholarly and maintaining a correspondence with leading men of this and other lands." He was "choleric and passionate, devoutly pious and wonderfully prevalent in prayer." He died in July 1776 on the exact day when the Declaration of Independence arrived in Newburyport. He was buried next to his mentor and friend, George Whitefield, in the crypt at Old South.
