The Spirit had prepared Peter and Cornelius for their saving encounter in Caesarea; each had experienced a divine visitation by which their paths were directed toward each other. This meeting of Jew and Gentile reflected the ancient prophetic promise that Israel - the seed of Abraham - would lead the nations to know and enter into the blessing of the living God. Peter was about to mediate that knowledge and blessing to a houseful of eager Gentiles. But even as that encounter of Jew and Gentile looked backward, it also looked forward, providing the symbolic preface to God's composite Church of the new creation.
