This sermon begins a series of sermons looking at the suffering (passion) of our Lord Jesus Christ. In this sermon we will look at the agony of Christ as He suffers in the garden of Gethsemane. Christ here is being prepared for the sufferings which were to come upon Him and the cup of the wrath of God which He must drink. Through this time of prayer and putting of His lips to the cup, we see that our Lord affirms His purpose and calling to come and to suffer and die in the place of sinners. This affords us several practical lessons which we will also consider. When we consider the cross and all that surrounds it, we get a glimpse not only at the unspeakable wrath of God, but also the unspeakable love which He has toward sinners. It is at the cross that we witness the love of God and where this love is put on display for all to see, it is here that we see God commending his love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. It is when we get a real sense and sight of the sufferings of Christ that the hearts of believers are drawn closer to Him, value Him and love Him all the more. This in turn leads them to a desire after holiness so that they desire to be made more holy and not add to His sufferings. But it is also for the unbeliever a most blessed thing to consider Christ and his sufferings because in light of this we learn what we must suffer if we remain outside of him and so we are urged to flee from the wrath to come, but we also learn that Christ is a sufficient savior for the greatest of sinners.
