Bitter hearts, fractured families, broken friendships, self-centered pleasure seeking – the Corinthian church was a mess: it was full of people like us! Sinners, saved by grace and on the pathway to glory. All of us made "saints" on the merits of Another. The Corinthian church was darkly stained by its culture and its members carried habits of hedonism into the church. Everyone had an opinion and everyone took whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted it; they didn't care if it was harmful or grieved the heart of their God … or hurt others they loved. The saints in Corinth looked down their spiritual noses, pointing fingers at each other all the while demonstrating they were off in the weeds and in need of a massive course correction. Thankfully the Lord commissioned the Apostle Paul to both demonstrate self-denial and teach them the loving heart of self-control. " … but I discipline my body and make it my slave …" (1 Cor 9:27a)
