The Lord did not create the Sabbath for His own sake, but for the man and woman He had created. The Sabbath was for their happiness, joy and refreshment. God didn’t need it. He doesn’t need to rest or sleep. The Lord Jesus wasn’t tired after six days of creating. The Sabbath is God’s gift to us.
If we are to use the Bible as Jesus did, we must know it well and be acquainted with all its contents. So, we must read it diligently, humbly, perseveringly, and prayerfully. Then, we will find its texts coming to our aid in the time of need. This understanding does not come to man by intuition. The Bible is of no value if it is left always lying on a shelf, or carelessly looked at now and then. We must hide God’s Word in our heart that we might not sin against Him (Psalm 119:11).
Jesus, as Lord of the Sabbath, is sovereign over our days, over our work, over our rest, over our worship, … This means that our obedience is to be governed, not by rigid (or grudging) adherence to our interpretation of the “letter of the law,” but by understanding and applying God’s heart and Spirit in the law. We must take care not to “strain at a gnat and swallow a camel” (Matthew 23:24)
