The worst intoxicant in the world is worldly pride. The Corinthians had been puffed up in their fleshly minds and had deceived themselves. As a result they gloried in men, and a party developed around each of the ministers that God had sent to them.
There is probably little that Paul could have said that would have so abased the Corinthians if they had listened to them. A man must turn aside from the wisdom of the world in order to find the wisdom of Christ. This is why Isaiah cried, “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts…” [Isaiah 55].
