Yahweh ratified His covenant with Abram with a ceremony in which He took all the burden of fulfilling the obligations of the covenant upon Himself.
Yahweh would be Abram's shield, and the reward He provided Abram was very great indeed: a lineage that would number as great as the stars in the sky. Not only his direct descendants, but also his descendants by faith as well.
But one descendant is the ultimate offspring about whom God was speaking, and who would ultimately inherit the fulfillment of the prophecy of the Promised Land. The heir of all creation, Jesus Christ, inherits the entire New Creation.
But this will not happen before the Lord's appointed time, because just as there was an appointed time for the iniquity of the Amorites to be complete, there is an appointed time for the iniquity of the world and the devil to be complete as well, and the Lord will not come in judgment until that time is fulfilled.
