Lecture 1 from the 'ANALYZING THE FEDERAL VISION SEMINAR' at Woodruff Road PCA
'Just Who is a Christian Anyway?' - Dr. Guy Waters
The Federal Vision (FV) is a theological system that challenges the Westminster Standards' teaching on several major doctrines. The FV is contrary to the Westminster Standards, but many of its proponents believe that they are true to the Westminster Standards, or are refining the Standards at key points.
FV proponents maintain that membership in the covenant of grace is objective, essentially vital, and undifferentiated. They do not teach that some are in the covenant 'inwardly' and others only 'outwardly.'
FV proponents believe that the Bible teaches two elections: election according to the decree, and election according to the covenant. In practice, proponents blend the two together into a single election.
FV proponents advocate a doctrine of election that is conditional (conditioned on our performance) and changeable (one may be elect, then reprobate, then elect)
FV proponents ground assurance of grace and salvation in baptism and covenantal membership.
