In Joshua 3 God held back the flooding waters of the Jordan River so that God's people could cross the Jordan in order to enter the Promised Land.
Let me go back briefly to Israel's history: You will remember if you study the history of the Israelites that Israel was once in bondage to Pharaoh down in the land of Egypt but God called Moses to lead them out of Egypt in their great Exodus through the Red Sea.
God's desire was for the Israelites to enter the Promised Land, the land of Canaan, the land that flowed with milk and honey.
Unfortunately due to their lack of faith the Israelites wandered in the Wilderness for 40 years instead of entering the Promised Land.
Finally, when Moses died Joshua was chosen by God to lead the next generation of Israelites into the Promised Land which was the Land of Canaan.
If you study the Bible you will discover that Joshua and Caleb were the only adults from the first generation of Israelites that were in the Wilderness to enter the Promised Land.
Now I want you to notice in Joshua 4 that when the Israelites crossed the River Jordan, that 2 memorials were set up in memory of the crossing of the River Jordan.
Twelve Men from the 12 tribes of Israel were to take 12 stones and carry them to their first overnight camping spot, Gilgal on the other side of the Jordan to build a memorial in the Land of Canaan.
The memorial stones were there to remind the Israelites and the generations that followed of the Faithfulness of God.
Every time God's people passed those locations they had rocks of reminders of God's Power and of God's Presence and of God's Provision for the nation.
