In Romans 1:18-23 Paul answers six questions about God's revealed wrath that show why we are in need of God's revealed righteousness in the gospel. Question 1: Against whom is God's wrath revealed? Answer 1: God's wrath is revealed against all ungodly, unrighteous truth suppressors (v.18). Question 2: Why is God's wrath revealed against all men and women? Answer 2: God's wrath is revealed because they are without excuse before Him in His courtroom (v.19e). Question 3: How do we know they are without excuse and worthy of God's wrath? Answer 3: They are without excuse because evidence proves that the truth they suppressed was God's clear revelation of His eternal power and divine nature through His creation (v.19-20). Question 4: What should they have done with this truth to avoid God's wrath? Answer 4: They should have honored Him as He was revealed and given Him thanks (v.21a). Question 5: What happened to them instead that causes God's wrath to be revealed against them? Answer 5: Their thoughts became futile, their foolish hearts were darkened, and they became fools in spite of their claims to be wise (v.21b-22). Question 6: What evidence proves that they became fools deserving of God's wrath? Answer 6: They committed idolatry by exchanging the glory of the immortal God with images of mortal beings (v.23).
