3 point sermon: 1)The setting, 2) The dream, 3) The Response 1)The setting- Jacob, flees for his life for fear of his brother Esau. Probably alone and with little possessions he starts this journey to find a wife. Whereas Rebecca was brought to Isaac, Jacob is his own messenger. 2)The dream- God uses this situatin to bring special revelation to Jacob in the form of a dream. Jacob is shown the staircase connecting heaven and earth. Jacob is given the same promises as Abraham and Isaac but the promise is further explained. 3) The response- Jacob finds out that God was closer than he had realized. He memorializes the place. A gateway between heaven and earth is revealed that gives Jacob a closer connection between himself and heaven. This stairway to heaven is provided by God unlike the other stairway to heaven designed by the makers of the Tower of Babel.
