It is a given to every true believer that our God has total control over the world he has made. And for that reason we look beyond secondary causes when disruptive things happen in the world. Even Insurance companies have done so in our nation’s history, referring to certain events where nature makes war on man as acts of God. God brings the wind out of his storehouse the Bible says. God controls things like weather and pestilence like Aids and Ebola.
It is God who imposes order on the world he has made so that we can call it cosmos. But when chaos occurs-when it is as if there is de-creation occurring-God is reminding us that He is holy and that He is a God whose judgments are active in the earth and that there shall also be a Day of final Judgment. Fallen man worshipping and serving his idols is like a tenant that refuses to pay his true landlord any rent. Eventually the impenitent idolater will be cast out.
The 10 plagues in Egypt impart some of its language to the book of Revelation and our day. The trumpet judgments in Revelation 8 and the bowls of wrath in Revelation 16 invoke some of the language of the plagues in Egypt to describe God’s control over all creation and his judgment upon an idolatrous world. The 10 plagues that we will be looking at is no mere ancient history lesson. ‘He who has an ear-let him hear!’
