Have you ever said, "What were they thinking?" Or more personally, "What were you thinking?" Our behavior flows from the thoughts that we allow to be expressed. If you watch someone's actions or listen to their words, you can determine to some degree what they believe and think.
This morning, we want to stop, listen, and think with a woman who has gone through an incredible amount of suffering. She had tried to make ends meet by preparing food for her family during the famine. She had followed her husband out of the Promised Land into Moab. She had left her friends in Bethlehem behind. She had buried her husband, Elimelech, in Moab. She had watched her sons break God's law by marrying Moabite women who came from families who were idolaters. She hoped for the best considering the situation. Within marriage, both her son's wives remained barren for 10 years. Eventually, her sons died leaving her with no blood relatives around. Her two daughters-in-law stuck by her side. After a tremendous season of suffering, she hears good news from Bethlehem and travels with Ruth, her faithful and converted daughter-in-law. She is home, and when questioned by her peers, she reveals something very important about her theology.
We all have a belief about God. The important thing is that it lines up with the truth. Today, the title will be "Naomi's Theology: Understanding the Almighty."
